The correct use of our candles is of great importance to enjoy them to the fullest. For example, did you know that you should always place our rustic candles at least 10 cm apart to prevent leaks?

First remove any loose pieces of wax by hand, and then lay a sheet of kitchen paper on the remainder of the wax stain and run over it with a hot iron. The candle wax will stick to the kitchen paper.

If the stains are on a smooth surface, a hair-dryer is an effective way of melting the candle wax. You can then remove it with kitchen paper.

It is important to make sure there is a sufficiently large distance between the candles (at least 10 cm).

Always burn the candles in a suitable holder or on a heat-resistant coaster.

There are a number of different ways to clean the burner:

1. Try to push the solidified wax out of the burner from the side.

2. Briefly heat the burner so that the bottom layer becomes fluid. Then try to push the solidified wax out of the burner from the side.

3. If the first two methods do not succeed, we recommend that you put the burner in the freezer for a short time. The cold temperature shrinks the wax, making it easier to remove.

No, the label on the bottom of the candle does not need to be removed before using the candle.

Yes, the label around the candle should be removed before using the candle.

The strength of the fragrance is made for the eight sticks that come with the product.

If the fragrance is too strong for you, you can always use less sticks. This way the fragrance will be less intense.

It is not necessary to rotate the sticks. The quality of the sticks in our reed diffusers is so good that they distribute a lovely scent in your home for several weeks.

Online you can find various suggestions using ceramic flower pots and tealights to heat a room. We don’t recommend this as a way to heat your home due to safety reasons associated with burning candles.

We always advise to use a minimal distance of 10 centimetres between the candles and to use proper candle holders.

Also it’s very important to never leave the candles unattended.

Yes, that is possible. We advise to use special candle paint.

It’s even possible to draw on a candle with a blunt pencil as long as you don’t scratch too deep.

You can also paint the outside of our fragranced glasses or tealight holders with regular hobby paint.

Yes you can. Keep in mind it’s important to remove the label before you light the candle.

If you have customised a glass candle; be sure that there is no over hanging paper that can make contact with the flame.

Yes, we advise to use a heat resistant holder with the aluminium cups and the transparent cups. The holder makes sure the heat of the tealights spreads and doesn’t warm your table.

Recycling

Here you can find some answers to common questions about recycling our products.

Yes, they can. The industrial glass recycling process will separate this material.

Only the CleanLight glass can’t go into the glass waste bin as it’s made from borosilicate glass.

The simplest solution is to place the glass in the oven at 70 degrees Celsius. Ensure you wear protection when removing the glass from the oven. This should melt all the residual wax and enable you to throw it away or reuse it. Once empty you can further clean with some paper towel once the wax is removed.

You could remove it also with hot water, but be sure to not get the wax in the drain. Dispose of the waste wax in your household waste.

You can put it in the waste bin or reuse. You can also check if there’s a local community looking for left over wax to make new candles from it.

This is officially chemical waste so you can’t pour it down the sink. If you don’t enjoy the fragrance perhaps first check with your neighbours and see if they would like the product or move it to another area of your house. Alternatively we’d recommend to put the diffuser in the shed/outhouse and let it stay there until the liquid has completely evaporated.

No, the wooden sticks absorb solvents from the liquid in your reed diffuser; these are not okay for the environment and should not be added to the green waste for recycling. Instead, you can put them in the regular waste bin.

Due to the melting point of wax this is not recommended as your drain may get blocked when the wax cools down. Heating this up in the oven or rinsing with hot water in the sink are still the best options.

Yes, they are. In the Netherlands you can put them in the PMD/PBP bags along with other plastic recycling.

In other countries please check with your local recycling procedures.

As long as you don’t use outdoor wax indoors and don’t see soot (black smoke) coming off the wick it’s okay.

If you make your own candle(s) be sure to use the right kind of wick; hobby shops can help you with this.

Bolsius has been lighting the way since 1870, and we strongly believe that it is our responsibility to keep our world a liveable, healthy, and safe place for future generations.

Safety

Safety is a top priority for us. That is why all our candles display symbols that explain how to use the candle correctly.

It is very important that the holders are manufactured from non-flammable materials and that there is a sufficiently large distance (at least 10 cm) between the candles. For a tealight holder, it is important that the heat generated by the burning tea-warmer can escape. The holder should therefore not be closed or sealed.

Our accessories have been carefully designed to allow our candles to burn optimally and to comply with all safety regulations. Our accessories are available in different types, shapes and materials.

Our memorial lights are intended to be lit once so that they can then burn continuously.

Because it is not possible to keep watching the candle all the time, the chance of fire and its consequences is reduced considerably when the candle is burned outside.

Always make sure that you do not place the candle in the immediate surroundings of flammable materials.

Yes, a burning candle may never be left unattended. Candles burn with a naked flame so there must always be somebody nearby.

The best way to put out our candles is with a candle snuffer, which you should hold over the wick as far as the liquid wax. The wick then stops burning without an afterglow, it doesn’t break off, and it is covered with new candle wax for the next time you light the candle.

Never put out a candle with water!

When you buy candles, always make sure they’ve got the RAL quality mark on it. This means the candles don’t soot and that the raw materials are checked, so they don’t contain benzene or toluene. When candles have the RAL quality mark, you don’t have to worry about harmful ingredients.

Read more about the RAL quality mark here.

Candle care

Safety is paramount! Enjoy candlelight without any worries and make sure you have them on a sturdy coaster, in a holder, or on a plateau away from curious hands. Another tip: do not place them near a heat source, or in the sun, and make sure that they are always at least 10 centimetres apart. This will guarantee you the best burn results.

CleanLight

Find answers to your CleanLight questions here.

We don’t advise to use the dishwasher to clean the holder, but to clean it carefully by hand. If you put the holder in the dishwasher, the print might fade after a while. It’s also possible water will enter the double walled glass.

There will be no wax remains as the refill burns up completely.

If you do want to clean the holder, it’s best to use a kitchen towel or the soft side of a sponge. You can add a small bit of warm water and soap.

Don’t forget to remove the wick plate before cleaning the glass. We advise to remove it with a wooden or plastic spoon. Don’t use a metal object, this can damage the glass. The wick plate can go to the waste bin.

Make sure the holder is dry before you use it again.

At this moment there’s only the green holder. Consumer tests show the green glass was most liked. In the future it’s possible we will introduce different colours.

At this moment we only have the starter pack with this fragrance. It’s always possible that we’ll have a different fragrance in the starter pack in the future. If you don’t like Gardenia & Fig, you might like one of our other CleanLight fragrances.

No, the holder is made from borosilicate glass, a special handmade glass that’s suitable for high temperatures and the will last for a long time.

In case your holder breaks, you can’t recycle it with other glass waste. It’s better to put it in the regular waste bin. Be careful for sharp edges!
